1. This Moldable Stiffener is so stiff, how do you expect me to stitch through this stuff? This is the number one question here at Poorhouse Quilt Designs! We have a quick and easy answer – simply use a Microtex Sharp Size 90 Needle. Schmetz and other manufacturers make them. For more information on this topic, visit this blog post.
2. How do I cut Moldable Stiffener? Use any good quality pair of shears; scissors with serrated edges holds the stiffener in place rather than slipping away from the blades. I use Karen Kay Buckley’s 7 1/2″ Perfect Scissors.
3. What is the difference between Moldable Stiffener and Moldable Batting?Moldable Stiffener is hard and becomes soft and pliable when heated; it can be molded over a form or shaped by hand. It can also be re-shaped by heating again.
Moldable Batting starts out soft and fluffy, like a polyester batting. When it is heated with steam, it shrinks and can also be molded over a form. It takes a few seconds of heating before it reacts. Unlike Moldable Stiffener, it cannot be re-shaped after it has been heated.
Always follow the Manufacturer’s instructions for heating.
4. I can’t find the interfacing or moldable product that you are recommending, can you give me a substitution? Click here for the substitution table – email me if you have any questions!
