When Susan Emory of Swirly Girls Designs asked me to be a part of the Hello blog hop, I said “heck ya!” This fabric is so cute! Here’s a pic of Susan’s booth at Quilt Market – loved it!!
So… I chose to make a Honeycomb Tote, because I just love the retro phones in the Hello Call Me fabric!
The hexagons for the Honeycomb handbag are 5-1/2″ tall – just tall enough to accentuate those ringing phones!! I used blue Hashtag for the lining, the black Make a Point for the handles and the bottom, and the black Punctuate It for the hexagon binding strips.
I love the ransom letters in this line, too – they could have been applied to one of the hexagons with some crazy initials!!
Click on the pic below for a better look at the fabrics AND some cute free patterns that Susan designed for this line!
I started my tote by fussy-cutting the fabric for the hexagons, so that I would get at least one full phone in each hexagon. Then I followed the pattern to make the tote, which uses Bosal’s pre-cut Hexagons.
For the Honeycomb handbag, we use a 3-part zigzag – this is the stitch that holds our hexagons together. Have you tried this stitch? It’s a zig-zig-zig and a zag-zag-zag (see the picture at right)- It is a great stich to use if you need a wide zigzag, but you also want it to look unobtrusive and not so “thready”. Where to find this stitch? Find it in the utility stitches further down from your zigzag.
Wait – we’ve got GOODIES!!
We are giving away a Honeycomb Handbag pattern, with Hello fabrics (the aqua colorway) and the precut hexagon foundations that you will need – comment below to be entered!! We will pick a winner at random, on July 25th at 9 am!
*** Thanks so much for all of the great comments – this contest is closed, we have a winner. Hope you enjoyed our take on Hello! ***
