Hello, and welcome to the Poorhouse (teehee – as quilters, aren’t we all here?) – glad you could stop – now let’s POP!
When Joanne (aka the Fat Quarter Gypsy) asked me to join in this blog pop fun, I just naturally said yes! Pop ups are so much fun to make – and they go together so quickly! They make wonderful (practical) gifts and (useful) storage around the house.
I based my Pop up on the Turn Dash Quilt – this quilt is springy and fun – just like the Pop ups!
What fabric to choose…hmmm… Andover Fabric’s Prairie Flowers! This line reminds me of 70’s calicos and my first forays into sewing clothing for myself (peasant skirts, anyone?). This pop-up can be made with scraps, too!
I chose the Medium size Pop Up – perfect for a scrap bin at the cutting table. You will need the Turn Dash pattern for the block instructions and the Stacking Pop Up pattern to put the pop-up together- then you will need the instructions here:
Time for a tip!
If you are like me, you are always looking for ways to make your sewing easier – so, here’s a tip for making the loops and ties in the Pop up pattern – Use a 1″ Bias tape maker! This is oversized to make it easier to use – you can also use the 3/4″ Bias maker.
Don’t be afraid – we will not be cutting on the bias! Here’s how I use it:
- Cut the ties as described in the pattern.
- Insert one end of the tie into the wide end of the tape maker, and guide to the smaller end using a seam ripper in the slot.
- When the fabric comes out the other side, it is folded for you. Don’t pull out too much here.
- The instructions on the tape maker say to iron – I don’t.
- Bring everything to the sewing machine and make the second fold right at the machine.
- Lower the presser foot and start sewing your ties.
Voila – I hope you liked that tip!
How do I win the prize? Just write a comment on my blog telling me what you will do with your Medium pop-up. On Sunday, February 21st at 9pm EST I will pick a winner out of those who have commented.
BUT… wait, there’s more!
Each giveaway includes:
