postheadericon Inspiration for Leaves!

Our Natural Inspiration Leaf Bowls pattern has only been out for a few months, with rave reviews! So, I thought I’d bing it, to see what quilt shops have created with this pattern. I found that Capital Quilts in Gaithersburg, MD is running a few classes on the Leaf Bowl. Here are their cool samples:

Don’t you just love the the Kaffe’d Palm Leaf? Love the blue birch also!

These leaves are simple to make, you can also enlarge the pattern to any size! Take the leaf pattern page to any copy shop and let them enlarge it for you. How striking on your table!

If you are in the Gaithersburg area, classes are Sat., Jan. 14  or Sat., Mar. 17, 2012.

Have fun! -Kris

postheadericon What’s New Wednesday – 9/14/11

Hello out there! What’s new this week? Thought I’d show everyone a sample bag I just sent off to Exclusively Quilters from their Let the Sunshine In line! This line just screams modern baby so  I made the Mom‘s Messenger Bag from my Ready Set Go, Baby Necessities to Sew book – and it just came out so cute!

We made some changes that I would like to share! First of all, we used Inn Control Plus from Innovative Craft Products! This really gave our bag some “oomph”! It is so stable – you can stand this baby on the table and fill it up (no slumpy bag with this product!)! We quilted the flap only…then we took advantage of the fusible and just fused the front, back and sides of the bag. It really saves time!

We also added swivel hooks and D-Rings to the Strap – I am planning a separate post on that!

We used PUL for the lining of the Mom’s Messenger  - in case she puts anything messy in the diaper bag! (That never happens….)  The PUL is the white fabric shown in the lower photo. By now, you probably know what this is but, let’s talk about it anyway! PUL is a Polyurethane Laminated fabric – it’s soft, flexible, and waterproof! You’ll find it being used in everything from lunchboxes, re-useable diapers, and more! I purchased mine from Nancy’s Notions  and really liked the quality.

I really found this product easy to use  – here are my notes from using it:

  • Cutting – I cut in single layer because I found it was slippery.
  • Use a Microtex sharp 80/12 needle.
  • Pin in the seam allowances, so that you don’t create holes.
  • I did not use any special presser foot  – just what I would normally use.

I hope you’ll give PUL a try on the next project that you might like to have a waterproof lining! It’s easy to use and it looks great!

I am so pleased to tell you that I have a new project featured in the latest issue of Asian Fabric magazineThe project is called the Taipei Tech Tote and it is pictured at right! This picture shows some of the other projects in the magazine – they all look great!

Taipei Tech Tote features an adjustable shoulder strap as well as handles insuring that you always have a good hold on your laptop!Soft and Stable gives your laptop the padded protection that it needs and the top zipper ensures that your equipment is secure!

I used beautiful Kona Bay Fabrics, which have a wonderful hand. I used the Burgundy from the Orimono Collection II and Sand from the Nobu Fujiyama Cherish Collection – all of the scrap rectangles were also from the Cherish Collection.

A side note – New Hampshire is well represented in this magazine! Cary Flanagan of Something Sew Fine  has a quilt in the magazine called Dreaming of Lilies!

postheadericon Be-jeweled Blenders

It’s Giveaway time!!

I have 5 fat quarters from Blank Quilting’s Yolanda Fundora. These FQs are in goregeous tones of magenta, red, turquoise, purple and bright green! They are from a “blender” line called Tessuto! I used some Tessuto in my coffee break placemats.

Blenders – they are the workhorse of your fabric collection. They make fast friends of fabric that might not normally get along well together. They can stretch your stash! They can add pizzazz or add calm.

OK – how do you get your free FQs? Just comment and we’ll pick a winner on Friday August 5th! Good luck!

This is my favorite of all of the fabrics – though it is hard to pick a favorite! The center bag is the Monday Messenger - WOW – the main red fabric with all of the instuments is great…retro! I especially love the drum set on this fabric – it is near and dear to my heart since I have to listen to our drum set every day! (If you have teenage boys you know what I mean!!) The last bag on the right below is Hoodie’s favorite – the On Tour with apples with a gorgeous purple lining (nettie dots)!
